Bridge To Terabithia By Katherine Patterson I chose the book Bridge To Terabithia by Katherine Patterson because it sounded interesting, and when the movie came out I wanted to compare the two, and I really enjoyed the storyline. Adventure, family, fantasy, and drama are the genres of this book. Bridge to Terabithia fits adventure because everyday would be an adventure and everyday Jess and Leslie would conquer something and learn something new. Family is a big factor. Everyday things would revolve around family and they would always help one another. The book is mostly fantasy because Terabithia is a made up would with different fairies monsters and creatures. Drama is made in day-to-day basis in the Aarons household, with all his siblings, and the mother doing everything for them from ironing, washing clothes, cooking, and cleaning.
A 13-year-old boy from Virginia has a hectic life, one of five children, Jesse Aarons being the only boy (Joyce Ann, May Belle, Ellie, and Brenda Aarons). In the mornings before school he would live to run, and at recess during the day at school he loves to race. Jesse is an amazing artist who finds drawing something very calm and soothing to do. One morning on the bus to school, Leslie Burke, a new student makes friends with Jesse. Leslie is a really good writer, and with the way Jesse draws, they were to be able to create a secret world only for them, with their imaginations. When they get off the bus they raced because they both love running, and end up finding the perfect place with a rope swing and lake for “Terabithia”. A school bully, Janice Avery becomes the beast in Terabithia. Jesse and Leslie learn and overcome their fears and battles in Terabithia. Closer and closer to Jesse’s birthday, Leslie is planning a surprise for him; she gets him paints because she really thinks he does some great artwork. One Sunday, Jesse asks Leslie if she would like to church with him, after church Leslie thinks about how the Aarons have to believe in the Bible because they are Christian, but she says she doesn’t have to believe in it, and she thinks its beautiful.
Jesse Aarons, is the main character and the protagonist of the novel, he is also a runner who lives in a house with all girls, and a mom and a dad. Jesse likes to draw, ands keeps a sketchbook of his drawings at home under his pillow. He is not very open to people about those types for things he likes to keep those to himself and Leslie. Even the slightest touch such as May Belle, one of his sisters drawing in it made him very mad. Jesse is the fastest runner in the class, but gets beat by Leslie.” Leslie Burke is a girl who is friends with Jesse and joined his school, as a new student. Leslie likes to write, and she is a very imaginative, open-minded, just like the song in the movie and positive person. Leslie seems like Jesse’s only friend, on because of Terabithia. Leslie does not have any brothers or sisters, and her family has just settled into a new house, with no TV and some furniture, but not very much. “Jesse drew the way some people drank whiskey”, We are just getting to know Jesse and we now know that he is very arts and can tell he likes to do things like this. Leslie is very friendly, and likes to hang around and be funny. One day at school, one of the assignments was to whach a television program, and she asked the teacher, ”What if you don’t have a television”. All the kids thought this was pretty stupid. I like the way how she did not fight with anyone, she was calm, and simply explained why her father thinks whatching TV is just a waste of your time. Leslie often gives the impression of being absolutely fearless, which Jess likes and finds intimidating. Leslie's apparently fearless nature rubs off of Jesse, he wishes he could be the same way. However, as we see at the end of the novel, Leslie's fearlessness is wasted because of her tragic event. Brenda Aarons is one of Jesse’s sisters. From the beginning of the novel she has been asking for favors from her mother, and pocket money, her parents can’t afford. She knows how to get her way with her parents, she asks her mom for 5 dollars for new school supplies, saying that her father has already promised to give it to her and Ellie. “Your friend has died on her way to Terabithia”. The fact that Brenda is the one who breaks the news to Jesse in the novel only serves to increase the shock, because she is not mentioned much. One really big idea could be in the last chapter, when the Burkes move away Jesse builds the bridge to Terabithia. Jesse feels the need to do this because Leslie had died from the rope breaking and she drowned, to prevent this, he makes a bridge, also because there is no more rope. Jess also crowns May Belle as Terabithia princess, he does this because May Belle really wanted to be a part of Terabithia, and towards the end, when Jesse was trying to figure out what to do with Terabithia, after Leslie’s accident, May Belle was trying to get across, and Jesse heard some screams thinking it was Leslie and she wasn’t really dead, but it was really May Belle, and he had gotten so upset because he wanted Terabithia to be a place only for Leslie, and him. May Belle also wanted to be involved with Terabithia. When Jesse goes back to school, without Leslie, he feels of as he doesn’t have any friends, and he just wants to be alone. When a boy in the class told him, “Now Aarons is the fastest runner”. Jesse got very agitated and mad, because the boy was referring to Leslie being gone, and he was so mad, he threw a fist at the boy. He was so attached to Leslie, and they were best friends, I would see why he did this. The principle told him that it was hard, and she felt the same way when she lost her husband. And that he would just have to get over it with time.
The biggest conflict in the book, is when Jesse gets a call from his teacher to go to the Smithsonian museum, and when he asks him mother for permission, half asleep half awake she tells him yes, not really aware of where he was going, leaving Leslie to go to Terabithia alone trying the rope swing, but it broke and she drowned. As soon as he hears this, he takes his paints and squeezes all the paint out into the lake because he didn’t want to have them, to remember her that way. So much has changed because Leslie isn’t with him anymore.
One word I came across is jaculate, jaaculate means to throw, especially a spear or a dart. Bath phobia, bath phobia is a fear of depths. Ambivium is a street or road leading around a place instead of to it. Pacify means to ease anger. Dearth means a lack of something. There is a 1997 and 2007 film, the older one is much more different, but the 2007 book and 2007 film are similar, I read the book first and saw the movie, they are not much different.
